âYou seriously had your brother deliver ingredients to make sâmores?â she asks as I move her over to one of the firepits. Itâs U-shaped with blue crystal rocks along the fire and a comfortable couch across from it.
âYes, I did.â We sit on the couch as I say, âI canât have you wandering around this earth not knowing what a sâmore tastes like.â
I hand her a roasting stick and put a marshmallow on it. âOkay, so I just, roast this now?â She sticks the marshmallow directly in the fire, setting it on fire immediately.
âWhat are you doing?â
âI donât know. I havenât done this before. Is this wrong?â
I pull her stick up, bring the flaming ball of sugar toward me and blow it out.
âOh, thatâs, uh, that doesnât look appetizing.â
I chuckle. âSome people like it this way, but I personally donât. Letâs try again, but this time, weâll do it together.â With a napkin, I remove the burnt marshmallow and set it to the side. I load her up again and then move her to my lap so she rests comfortably on me. I hold the stick with her, and instead of sticking it directly into the flames, I show her how to hover above. Talking softly into her ear, I say, âThis is the perfect placement, not too close so you burn the hell out of it, and not too far away that it will take ages to heat. This will grant you the perfect toast.â
I feel her relax into my chest as my free arm wraps around her waist. âThank you for teaching me. No one has ever taken the time to show me the ways.â
I kiss her shoulder and say, âIf you need help with anything else, Iâm your man.â
âYouâre my man either way,â she says as she cuddles in closely.
Smiling to myself, I twist the roasting stick gently and say, âNow the success of a good marshmallow is to rotate the stick carefully so you get all sides toasted. See how itâs puffing up?â
âYeah.â
âYou have to be careful because itâs separating from its gooey center, and thereâs a chance the marshmallow will fall off. So tip the stick up just a bit to prevent that.â
âLike this?â she asks.
âYes, perfect, babe.â
She turns toward me and smiles genuinely. âYou just called me babe. You did before, but this feels different.â
âYou okay with that?â
âItâs cute.â
âYouâre cute.â
She rolls her eyes and nudges my shoulder. âDonât be corny.â
âJust stating the facts. Oh hey, watch your marshmallow, youâre getting close to the fire.â
âOops.â She lifts the stick. âClose one.â
I reach to the side and open the chocolate and the graham crackers and put together the pieces for her. âOkay, I think itâs ready. Pull it out carefully, and then place the marshmallow on the chocolate.â I hold it in front of her, and she does as instructed. âThen you take the graham cracker top and use it to pull the marshmallow off.â I show her just how to do it.
âOoo, smooth.â
I take the roasting stick and set it to the side.
